How to get the best out of a coaching programme

Investing in coaching is a commitment, not just from a time and financial perspective but you're also investing in your future self. You want to make sure that you're getting the most value out of each session. Below are some useful things to think when starting on a coaching programme.

Spend time choosing your coach. It's important to have a positive working relationship with your coach. Consider the type of coach you prefer and the personality traits you value. Do you prefer a coach who is more supportive or directive? Do you prefer face-to-face sessions or online coaching? Would you prefer a coach from a similar career path? Take the time to research potential coaches by exploring their websites and social media profiles, and asking friends and colleagues for recommendations. Most coaches offer a free consultation, which is an opportunity to meet and discuss your needs without any obligation. Take advantage of these consultations and speak to a few coaches before making a commitment to ensure that you choose the coach who is the right fit for you.

Come prepared. Prior to your initial coaching session, take some time to reflect on your goals. Many clients attend their first session without any preparation, which can hinder the coach's ability to understand their requirements and customise the coaching program to their unique situation. Consider where you want to be in a few months or a year - would you like to increase your confidence, receive a promotion, change jobs, or achieve a better work-life balance? Having a clear understanding of your objectives will help your coach guide you in the right direction.

Think about the frequency of sessions. A coaching program usually consists of six sessions scheduled over a designated time frame. To maintain momentum, it's best to schedule sessions no more than once a month, although this may vary depending on your specific goals. Having too much time between sessions can lead to forgetting what was discussed previously, resulting in a lack of progress.

Be honest. Many times, clients approach me with a specific objective in mind. However, as we continue with our coaching sessions, it becomes evident that there are underlying issues or limiting beliefs that need to be addressed in order to achieve their desired outcome. It's essential to uncover and resolve these deeper issues, but this can only happen if the client is willing to be open and honest. Coaching is an opportunity to express your emotions and thoughts, which helps to identify clear actions to move forward. At the same time, it's important to communicate with your coach if there are any areas you prefer not to discuss or if you're not finding a particular session helpful. In such cases, the coach can make necessary adjustments to meet your specific needs.

Expect homework. It's crucial to set aside time to work on the themes that emerge from your coaching sessions, whether it's simply reflecting on what's been discussed or focusing on a specific area. The homework assigned is similar to the routine suggested by a Personal Trainer at the gym - you wouldn't expect to see significant results by only visiting once a week without putting in additional effort. As your coach, we will collaborate to develop homework that is practical and can be integrated into your schedule.

Dont expect your coach to give you the answer. It's essential to understand that your coach won't provide you with answers or solutions. Instead, your coach will employ various techniques and strategies to assist you in achieving your objectives. Your coach cannot give you the answers because they are not you, and they are not living your life. Instead, they will help you gain a better understanding of yourself, act as a sounding board, and ask difficult questions to help you arrive at a resolution.

Follow up. If you have any questions or concerns, follow up with your coach between sessions. Often, you will be given homework or action items to complete, and if you are unsure about what is expected of you, don't hesitate to reach out to your coach. It's essential to clarify any confusion or uncertainties to avoid unnecessary delays or misunderstandings. At the outset of your coaching program, your coach will outline the level of contact that is permissible between sessions.

…and finally, enjoy it! You’re making a big investment in yourself, you should enjoy the process - no matter how uncomfortable it may get.
